Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the MAKKET website (https://www.makket.io) and mobile application (together, the "Platform"), operated by MAKKET ("we", "us", "our"). By accessing or using the Platform, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. About MAKKET

MAKKET is a digital discovery and trust platform for Nigeria's physical markets. We connect buyers with verified sellers operating in Nigeria's open-air markets. MAKKET is not a warehoused marketplace and does not take possession of goods. We facilitate discovery, verification, escrow payments, and delivery coordination.

2. Eligibility

3. User roles

The Platform serves three user types:

4. Transaction model

4.1 Transaction-first approach

MAKKET operates a transaction-first model. Buyers and sellers do not exchange contact information before a purchase is completed. Seller contact details are revealed to the buyer only after purchase, solely for legitimate dispute resolution.

4.2 Escrow payments

All payments are held in escrow by MAKKET until the buyer confirms receipt and satisfaction with the order. Funds are released to the seller (minus applicable commission) after confirmation or after the dispute resolution window closes.

4.3 Commission

MAKKET charges a commission on completed transactions. Current commission rates are displayed at checkout. Sellers are informed of the net payout before accepting an order.

5. Seller verification

Sellers on MAKKET are subject to a 3-tier verification process:

  1. Listed — basic profile with phone verification.
  2. Verified — physical market visit by MAKKET field agents to confirm stall existence, trader identity, and inventory.
  3. Premium — verified plus customer rating thresholds, response-rate standards, and escrow-secured transactions.

Verification status and Trust Scores are provided for informational purposes. MAKKET does not guarantee the quality, safety, or legality of any product listed on the Platform.

6. Prohibited conduct

You agree not to:

7. Intellectual property

The MAKKET name, logo, and all Platform content (excluding user-generated content) are owned by MAKKET and protected under applicable intellectual property laws. You may not use our trademarks without prior written consent.

By listing products on the Platform, sellers grant MAKKET a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to display product images and descriptions for the purpose of operating the Platform.

8. Disclaimers

9. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by Nigerian law, MAKKET shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of the Platform.

10. Dispute resolution

10.1 Order disputes

Disputes between buyers and sellers regarding orders should first be raised through the Platform's dispute resolution system. MAKKET will mediate in good faith and may release, refund, or split escrow funds based on the evidence provided.

10.2 Platform disputes

Any dispute arising from these Terms shall be governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The parties agree to first attempt resolution through negotiation, then mediation, before pursuing arbitration or litigation in Lagos, Nigeria.

11. Account suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, engage in fraud, receive repeated complaints, or for any other reason at our discretion. You may close your account at any time by contacting us. Outstanding escrow obligations will be settled before account closure.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via the Platform or email. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
